" Minä, kaupunki (I, the city) " is an experimental short film exploring detached, and anonymous city life through abstracting personal emotional states. By using overlapping images of myself and the cityscapes, I wish to convey a alerting feeling of detachment and the dark side of identity plays and independency turning into loneliness. Playing for the camera, feeling alive.
THIS IS MY SPACE
In these works I am exploring the feeling of alienation from the surrounding living environment and the inhabited body. During my exchange studies in Montreal, Canada I was unaware of a long condition sickness in me that made me feel isolated, confused and slow in motion. I found ease in exploring urban nature and in creating artworks conveying my ongoing emotional state. The experience of living in unfamiliar environment in a fragile body exposed me the core of my mentality which is build on northern lights, streams and riversides, intense darkness and endless light, vast empty space. Since this revelation the north as a living space has been the inspiration for my art work on physical, mental and aesthetic level. This is my space 201017”22 inkjet prints
Kasvunpaikka - suojastasi vihdoin villiinnyn ( from your shelter I will grow wild ) is photography series exploring a mechanical greenhouse system built in the wild arctic nature of Rovaniemi, Finland. While photographing, I was also interested in the capability of photographic medium to re-frame reality to convey emotions and atmosphere through form, color and texture.
The greenhouse, left unused during the winter, inspired me to develop dreamy imagery about human obsession to control the wild nature in terms to create harmony and beauty. Greenhouse has a controversial aura : while the plastic structure conceals controlled protection for growth, its natural environment is living wild and changing naturally through all four seasonal cycles of the north. During the process of photographing the greenhouse located in the wilderness of arctic circle, the greenhouse became a metaphor for humane experiences : growth, control and going wild. In the end of this project, I made series of self portraits in the greenhouse. Combining ideas of places, environment and my own body and its connotations is a theme I’ve been working with since.
